Campaign Nepal Brings Winter Relief to Flood-Affected New Mothers and Pregnant Women

Gaur, Rautahat, December 19:

Campaign Nepal, in collaboration with One Heart Worldwide (OHW), has stepped in to support some of the most vulnerable flood-affected families in Rautahat as winter tightens its grip. Between November 25 and December 18, the organization distributed essential relief materials to 611 households in Paroha and Dewahi Gonahi municipalities, with a specific focus on 457 pregnant women and 154 new mothers.

The September 2024 floods caused widespread destruction across Rautahat, displacing hundreds of families and leaving them in dire need of resources. As temperatures plummet, the situation has become even more precarious, particularly for pregnant women and new mothers who face heightened health risks.

In response, Campaign Nepal delivered warm winter clothing for mothers and their infants, flour supplements to combat nutritional deficiencies, and hygiene kits to prevent illnesses. The initiative, which cost NPR 2.27 million, was part of the Strengthening Maternal Neonatal Health Services (SMNHS) program, funded by OHW.

Local representatives lauded the effort, highlighting its life-saving impact. Mahesh Singh, Ward Chairperson of Paroha Municipality-3, remarked: “The September floods devastated our communities, and the harsh winter has made survival even harder for pregnant women and new mothers. This aid has brought immense relief, ensuring their safety and well-being during these tough times. We are grateful to Campaign Nepal and OHW for this timely intervention.”

Similarly, Dewahi Gonahi Municipality Health Coordinator, Jagga Ram, emphasized the program’s role in promoting maternal health: “Flood-affected families face greater health risks during winter. This support not only helps them recover but also encourages pregnant women and mothers to access healthcare services, improving maternal and neonatal outcomes.”

For many beneficiaries, the relief arrived as a lifeline. Nazni Khatun, a new mother from Dewahi Gonahi-4, shared: “The floods destroyed everything we had, and the winter made things even harder. The warm clothes and flour are a blessing for me and my baby. It feels good to know someone cares.”

Campaign Nepal’s Executive Director, Shatrudhan Singh, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, stating: “This relief effort demonstrates the power of collaboration in addressing immediate needs and long-term challenges. Together with OHW, we are committed to improving the lives of mothers and children.”

OHW Manager, Babita Bindu, further explained the initiative’s importance: “Flood-affected families are already vulnerable, and winter brings additional risks, especially for pregnant women and newborns. Our goal is to ensure they have the resources needed to survive and rebuild in these difficult times.”
